HC Deb 12 April 1910 vol 16 cc1212-3W
Mr. GILL

asked the Postmaster-General what percentage of boy messengers pass into the sorters' class?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

Two hundred and twenty-one appointments were made to the sorter's class in 1909. Of the officers appointed 171 or 77 per cent, had served as boy messengers. This number represents about 5 per cent of the Messenger force in London. I should perhaps add that provincial messengers are not eligible for London appointments.
