HL Deb 13 July 2000 vol 615 cc379-80

Read a third time.

Lord McIntosh of Haringey

My Lords, I beg to move that this Bill do now pass.

Moved, That the Bill do now pass.—(Lord McIntosh of Haringey.)

Lord Brougham and Vaux

My Lords, I do not wish to detain the House for long. The noble Lord was kind enough to respond fully to my questions at Second Reading. However, there is one question that I still have outstanding on which I seek clarification. I know that the Minister cannot say when the Bill will receive Royal Assent. However, will the orders be laid the day of, or the day after, Royal Assent to enable the clock to start ticking? What I am really trying to find out is when we shall be able to implement the Bill and get rid of these dreadful people from our lovely parks?

Lord McIntosh of Haringey

My Lords, it is not possible for me to say when Royal Assent will be given. However, if we were to assume for the sake of argument that Royal Assent were given by Thursday of next week, the orders could be laid immediately and would come into force at midnight on 28th October. That would be somewhat late for the ice cream trade but in good time for the hot dog trade!

Lord Brougham and Vaux

My Lords, I am grateful to the noble Lord.

On Question, Bill passed.
