HL Deb 14 July 1999 vol 604 c486

135 Schedule 1, page 55, line 28, leave out ("with the approval of the Treasury,").

Lord Falconer of Thoroton

My Lords, I beg to move that the House do agree with the Commons in their Amendment No. 135. I wish to speak also to Amendments Nos. 136 to 141.

The purpose of these seven amendments is to remove the requirement for Treasury consent or approval to arrangements for the pay, pensions and compensation of members and staff of the legal services commission.

These amendments reflect the fact that it is no longer the practice for new legislation to make pay and pensions provisions for non-departmental public bodies subject to Treasury consent. The commission's pay and pensions arrangements will continue to be subject to the Lord Chancellor's approval, and the Lord Chancellor will consult the Treasury as appropriate on issues affecting spending and general policy on public pay, pensions and compensation terms.

These are technical amendments designed to bring the relevant provisions in line with current Treasury policy. I commend the amendments to the House.

Moved, That the House do agree with the Commons in their Amendment No. 135.—(Lord Falconer of Thoroton.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
