HL Deb 06 March 1995 vol 562 cc109-10

9.46 p.m.

Viscount Ullswater

My Lords, I beg to move the second order.

Moved, That the draft order laid before the House on 16th February be approved [10th Report from the Joint Committee].—(Viscount Ullswater.)

Lady Kinloss

rose to move, as an amendment to the above Motion, at end to insert ("but that this House regrets that the proposed boundary does not enjoy full public support and notes the lack of clarity about arrangements which will be made for a number of matters, including the future of the Yorkshire Museum.").

The noble Lady said: My Lords, I would like first to thank all noble Lords who have spoken tonight in support of my amendment. I am grateful to the Minister for explaining the position of the future of the name for the City of York. It was no great surprise to hear what he had to say. I listened to him more in sorrow than anything else. The Government seem unwilling to heed the wishes of the people. The voice of the people, not only of the City of York but in increasing volume of those in the villages and surrounding areas of the proposed greater York planning area, is being ignored.

I hope that the Government will reconsider the position of North Yorkshire County Council and York City Council in the running of the Yorkshire Museum on the lines proposed this evening by others as well as myself. Because of the Government's refusal to listen to the feelings and views of the people of North Yorkshire and York City, I wish to test the opinion of the House. I beg to move.

Moved, That, as an amendment to the above Motion, at end to insert ("but that this House regrets that the proposed boundary does not enjoy full public support and notes the lack of clarity about arrangements which will be made for a number of matters, including the future of the Yorkshire Museum.").—(Lady Kinloss.)

9.47 p.m.
