25 Clause 49, page 25, line 30, after 'authority' insert 'or joint police committee'.

26 Page 25, line 35, after 'authority' insert 'a joint police committee'.

27 Page 25, line 38, after 'authority' insert 'or joint police committee'.

Earl Ferrers

My Lords, I beg to move that the House do agree with the Commons in their Amendments Nos. 25 to 27. Clause 49 provides powers of direction by the Secretary of State for Scotland to instruct Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Constabulary to inspect a police force if it is suspected that in is not being run efficiently.

Where a police area consists of more than one local authority region, the force is maintained in Scotland by a joint police committee. These amendments ensure that a power of direction applies equally to such a committee as it would to a police authority.

Moved, the House do agree with the Commons in their Amendments Nos. 25 to 27.—(Earl Ferrers.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
