HL Deb 02 November 1993 vol 549 c1001
The Chairman of Committees

My Lords, I beg to move the third Motion standing in my name on the Order Paper. Under Standing Order No. 62 the orders appointing many of the House's Select Committees remain in force and effect notwithstanding the prorogation of Parliament until such time as the House makes further orders of appointment in the next Session. The Select Committee on Medical Ethics does not, however, come within the ambit of Standing Order No. 62. This Motion is therefore necessary if it is to meet and deliberate as arranged in the week following the State Opening of Parliament. Meetings that week are essential if the Select Committee is to satisfy the wishes of the House that it report by the end of the year. When the meetings were arranged it was not envisaged that the new Session of Parliament would begin on 18th November and that there would therefore not be enough time before the meetings for the committee to be reappointed in the new Session. I beg to move.

Moved, That notwithstanding the prorogation of Parliament, the Select Committee on Medical Ethics shall have power to meet in the next Session of Parliament until such time as the House makes further orders of appointment.—(The Chairman of Committees.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
