The Chairman of Committees (Lord Ampthill)

My Lords, I beg to move the Motion standing in my name on the Order Paper. The purpose of this Motion is to appoint a Committee of Selection whose function is to select and propose to the House the names of the Lords to form most of our Select Committees. If the House agrees to the Motion, the Committee of Selection will meet on Thursday of this week so that the Select Committee work of the House may be quickly resumed. I beg to move.

Moved, That in accordance with Standing Order 61 a Committee of Selection be appointed to select and propose to the House the names of the Lords to form each Select Committee of the House (except the Committee of Selection itself and any committee otherwise provided for by statute or by order of the House) and the panel of Deputy Chairmen of Committees; and that the Lords following together with the Chairman of Committees be named of the Committee—L. Cledwyn of Penrhos, L. Colnbrook, L. Graham of Edmonton, L. Hesketh, B. Hylton-Foster, L. Jenkins of Hillhead, L. John-Mackie, L. Thurlow, L. Tordoff, L. Wakeham (L.
