HL Deb 29 April 1991 vol 528 cc480-1
The Chairman of Committees (Lord Aberdare)

My Lords, I beg to move the Motion standing in my name on the Order Paper.

Moved, That, as proposed by the Committee of Selection, the following Lords be named of the Select Committee appointed to consider the committee work of the House:

That the Committee have power to adjourn from place to place; That the Committee have leave to report from time to time; That the Minutes of Evidence taken before the Committee from time to time be printed and, if the Committee think fit, be delivered out; That the Committee do meet on Tuesday, 7 May, at 4.30 p.m. in Committee Room 4.—(The Chairman of Committees.)

Lord Shepherd

My Lords, perhaps I may ask a question of the Chairman of Committees. When was the report of the Select Committee of Selection available to Members of the House? My understanding is that it was available on Thursday evening. If that is so, and the House wanted to consider amendments to the list, bearing in mind that it does not contain the name of a Member of the other sex in your Lordships' House, there is no way in which an amendment could be made by placing the Motion on the Order Paper today. If I am right in saying that the report was laid on Thursday, then Members of the House would have seen the proposal only today unless they came in on Friday morning. I may be wrong in suggesting Thursday, but perhaps the noble Lord can confirm whether I am right or wrong.

The Chairman of Committees

My Lords, I am of the opinion that it was available on Wednesday. That is my advice.

On Question, Motion agreed to.
