§ 2.57 p.m.
§ The Lord Chancellor (Lord Mackay of Clashfern)My Lords, I beg to move that the Bill be now read a third time.
This Bill, the effect of which will be to release only the Public Record copy of the Australian Constitution Act 1900 from the provisions of the Public Records Act 1958, thereby enabling a gift of the Act to be made to the Commonwealth of Australia, has so far enjoyed unimpeded progress through both your Lordships' House and the other place. I am grateful to your Lordships and to Members in another place for the warm support which they have given to the Bill. That support is a measure of the respect, friendship and high regard which we have for the people of Australia, which has been so eloquently expressed in the many tributes paid on all sides during the passage of the Bill. The gift of a copy of the Act will, I am sure, go a long way to strengthening our relationship. It is therefore with every confidence that I invite your Lordships to give this Bill a Third Reading.
