HL Deb 06 December 1990 vol 524 cc275-6
The Chairman of Committees (Lord Aberdare)

My Lords, I beg to move the first Motion standing in my name on the Order Paper.

Moved, That a Select Committee on the Standing Orders be appointed; and that, as proposed by the Committee of Selection, the Lords following, with the Chairman of Committees, be named of the Committee:

  • Cawley, L.
  • Grey, E.
  • Jacques, L.
  • Mowbray and Stourton, L.
  • Renton, L.
  • Strabolgi, L.
Thurlow, L.—(The Chairman of Committees.)

Lord Renton

My Lords, perhaps I may be permitted to ask a simple question. The Motion has in thick type the preface, "Standing Orders (Private Bills)". However, the Motion itself is not confined to Private Bills but is in respect of a Select Committee on the Standing Orders. What is the true position? Naturally I am interested because I am surprised —I do not complain about the surprise—to find that my name is included among the members of the Select Committee.

The Chairman of Committees

My Lords, the Select Committee deals with Standing Orders on Private Bills and has nothing to do with other Standing Orders. I apologise if the noble Lord was not aware that he was on the Select Committee, but perhaps I may have some words with him later.

On Question, Motion agreed to.
