HL Deb 05 April 1990 vol 517 c1585

3.50 p.m.

Lord Middleton

My Lords, I beg to move the Motion standing in my name on the Order Paper. At this stage I should merely like to say how grateful I am for the way in which our report, Health Controls and the Internal Market, has been received by the noble Baroness and by noble Lords.

The noble Lord, Lord Gallacher, was my predecessor in the chair of Sub-Committee D. He set a very high standard, so his comments and remarks are all the more appreciated. I am most grateful to my noble friend Lord Ferrers for bringing us up to date with government thinking on these matters. It is very gratifying to know that this seems to be very much in accord with the ideas of the committee, which is still studying the matter in depth.

Perhaps I may pick up two matters. I was specially reassured by the view which my noble friend expressed concerning the Government's thoughts on the question of quarantine. It is absolutely essential that we keep out these diseases, especially rabies. I am delighted to hear that the Government are going to keep quarantine until there is no more risk. I was also grateful to hear what my noble friend had to say about increasing the number of vets. I commend the Motion to the House.

Moved, that this House takes note of the Report of the European Communities Committee on 1922: Health Controls and the Internal Market (9th Report, Session 1988–89, HL Paper 47) and of the Response from Her Majesty's Government (Cmnd. 815).— (Lord Middleton.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
