HL Deb 18 December 1989 vol 514 cc5-6

2.48 p.m.

Lord Molloy asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will consult the British Veterinary Association on European Community proposals concerned with all aspects of animal welfare.

The Minister of State, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Baroness Trumpington)

Yes, my Lords; we value their helpful contribution.

Lord Molloy

My Lords, I hope that the noble Baroness is aware of the fact that I readily accept her succinct but satisfying response. However, is she further aware that, like the RSPCA and the British Veterinary Association, British veterinary surgeons are much concerned about methods of transportation of animals on the Continent which would be outlawed in this country? Can she confirm that that particular aspect will be borne in mind?

Baroness Trumpington

Yes, my Lords.

Lord Molloy

My Lords, can the noble Baroness further confirm that, if what we desire should be the correct treatment of animals is not adhered to in Europe, our Government will stress the need for very effective deterrent measures?

Baroness Trumpington

Yes my Lords.
