HL Deb 11 February 1988 vol 493 c309
The Lord Chancellor (Lord Mackay of Clashfern)

My Lords, with the leave of the House, I should like to make a statement about appointments to the Table of the House following the retirement of the Clerk Assistant, Mr. John Grey, next Easter. In accordance with the recent practice, the preliminary consultations have been carried out by the noble Lord the Leader of the House. I should emphasise to the House that these have been thorough and wide-ranging, as was recommended by the Lader's group, whose report in 1973 was endorsed by your Lordships' House. I am glad to say that the consultations have resulted in the clear recommendations that Mr. Michael Wheeler-Booth, the present Reading Clerk, should succeed Mr. Grey as Clerk Assistant and that Mr. Michael Davies should succeed Mr. Wheeler-Booth as Reading Clerk. It is proposed that these appointments should take effect at Easter and I shall be inviting the House to approve the necessary Motions at the appropriate time.
