Viscount Davidson

My Lords, I beg to move that this House do agree with the Commons in their Amendment No. 14.

The purpose of this drafting amendment is to correct a defect in the requirements for killing an animal at the end of a series of procedures for which provision is made in Clause 15. As the Bill was originally drafted the clause required the person who carried out the procedures, or the last of the series of procedures, to cause the animal to be immediately killed, either by one of the standard humane methods listed in Schedule 1 or by a method authorised by his personal licence. The problem with this was that it took no account of the fact that the person whose duty it is to ensure that the animal is killed will not always be the person who actually carries out the killing. What is important is that the person who kills the animal should use either a Schedule 1 method or a method which is authorised in his personal licence and therefore established as one which he is competent to perform. This amendment makes the necessary adjustment to Clause 15(1), and I commend the amendment to your Lordships' House. I beg to move.

Moved, That this House do agree with the Commons in the said amendment.—(Viscount Davidson.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
