HL Deb 18 February 1986 vol 471 c507

2.56 p.m.

Lord Denham

My Lords, it may be for the convenience of the House if I announce that the Committee stage of the Local Government Bill will be adjourned at approximately 7.30 p.m. for a short period, and that during this adjournment the Second Reading of the Marriage (Wales) Bill will be taken.

It may also be for the convenience of the House if I now inform your Lordships that, as part of the effort by the television company—the television committee—to find ways of lighting the Chamber other than by the slightly obtrusive scaffolded lights, one of the chandeliers above the Strangers' Gallery will be turned off during this break. It is hoped that this will happen while the Sitting is suspended. This test is a preliminary to the possible removal of such a chandelier for tests and modifications.

Lord Harmar-Nicholls

My Lords, may I ask my noble friend whether it would not be a good idea to let the television companies know that they may be wasting their money? We may decide not to continue televising this House, and the change would involve a waste of money if and when we came to that decision.

Lord Denham

My Lords, this test is being carried out by our own television committee. They see it as part of the research necessary to produce the report on which my noble friend and others will subsequently make up their minds, and to enable them to see what sort of lighting can be used if and when your Lordships decide that further experimentation, or possibly something more permanent, may happen.
