HL Deb 01 July 1985 vol 465 c955

2.53 p.m.

The Lord Chancellor (Lord Hailsham of Saint Marylebone)

My Lords, I rise to move that this Bill be now read a second time. The main purposes of legislation relating to weights and measures is to provide definitions of units of measurement, to define standards by reference to which weights and measures can be verified, to prevent unauthorised units being used for trade, to ensure the accuracy of weighing or measuring equipment used for trade or available for use by the public, and to regulate the manner in which goods are sold.

This Bill consolidates the Weights and Measures Acts of 1963, 1976 and 1979, together with relevant amending legislation. It is pure consolidation. If your Lordships give this Bill a Second Reading, it will be referred to the joint committee in the usual way. I beg to move.

Moved, That the Bill be now read a second time.—(The Lord Chancellor.)

On Question, Bill read a second time, and referred to the Joint Committee on Consolidation Bills.
