HL Deb 04 April 1985 vol 462 c422
Lord Denham

My Lords, in moving that the House do now adjourn, I should just like to say this. We sometimes have our political differences between the sides of this House, and sometimes even between Benches on the same side of this House, as has been apparent today. But it is right that at 4.30 on a Maundy Thursday all these political differences should go into Recess, as we shortly hope to do. I should like on behalf of my noble friends on this side of the House to wish all noble Lords in other parts of the House a very happy Easter. Also, on behalf of the Whole House I should like to wish all those who work for us and serve us so well throughout the year a very happy and restful Recess and a very happy Easter.

Lord Ponsonby of Shulbrede

My Lords, perhaps I may join the noble Lord the Chief Whip in wishing all members of the staff, who serve this House so well, a restful Recess and couple with that, as he did, the wish that all other noble Lords also enjoy a restful Recess. As the noble Lord said, we have our political differences. However, in wishing the Government Chief Whip a restful and happy Easter Recess, I hope that the fact that his noble friend and my noble kinsman Lord Mersey has, with a little help from this side of the House, inflicted the third defeat on the Government in the course of this week will not cause him any loss of sleep during the Recess. We hope to continue with this winning streak when we return on 15th April for the Local Government Bill.

Lord Kilmarnock

My Lords, we on these Benches should also like to wish noble Lords in all parts of the House a very happy and well deserved Easter Recess. In particular, I should like to join my remarks to those of the other Whips in wishing the members of staff who make our deliberations possible a restful Recess. We must apologise that on this Maundy Thursday afternoon we have gone on perhaps a little longer than was originally intended, but we are grateful to them for the way they have held on and for looking after us as they always do. My Lords—a happy Easter!

House adjourned for the Easter Recess at half-past four o'clock until Monday, 15th April next.
