HL Deb 08 March 1984 vol 449 cc432-3

[References are to Bill (57) as first printed for the Commons]

Clause 14, page 10, leave out lines 5 to 8 and insert ("Act 1984, and this Act and the Merchant Shipping Acts 1894 to 1983 may be cited together as the Merchant Shipping Acts 1894 to 1984.

(2) This Act shall be construed as one with the Merchant Shipping Acts 1894 to 1983.").

Lord Lucas of Chilworth

My Lords, I beg to move that the House doth agree with the Commons in their amendment. This is a technical amendment. It is the normal practice to entitle an Act in this field as the Merchant Shipping Act of a particular year. That was not originally possible in this case because there was already a Merchant Shipping Act 1983. It was therefore necessary to include "(Miscellaneous Provisions)" in the title. As the Bill did not complete all its stages in 1983, this technical amendment changes the title to the more simple form of "Merchant Shipping Act 1984". It makes associated provision for amended citation together with other merchant shipping Acts. I hope therefore that the amendment, as proposed by the Commons, meets with your Lordships' agreement.

Moved, That this House doth agree with the Commons in the said amendment.—(Lord Lucas of Chilworth.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
