MEDICAL TRAINING FOR OVERSEAS

SERVICE

Lord Kennet asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether medical and nursing people who are trained in this country and likely to serve in countries where the customs of female circumcision, excision and infibulation exist, receive any teaching on the subject, and if so what.

Lord Trefgarne

Doctors and nurses are trained in this country primarily to meet the needs of patients in this country where the practices referred to by the noble Lord are deprecated unless performed for purely medical reasons. For doctors and nurses going overseas who require training specifically related to these practices, it would have to be arranged specially.
