HL Deb 19 November 1981 vol 425 cc572-3
Lord Aberdare

My Lords, I beg to move the second Motion standing in my name on the Order Paper.

Moved, That the Select Committee on the House of Lords Offices be appointed and that as proposed by the Committee of Selection the Lords following, with the Chairman of Committees, be named of the Committee:—

Lord Beswick

My Lords, while congratulating the noble Lord, the Lord Chairman of Committees, on the distinguished list he has here, may I ask him to assure the House that it is still necessary to have so formidable a size of committee? To have 61 members on a Select Committee seems rather on the large side. May I ask the noble Lord to say how that figure is arrived at?

Lord Aberdare

This has always been a large committee, my Lords, because there are a number of very important sub-committees like the Refreshment Committee, the Administration Committee, the Finance Committee and the Library Committee, and for that reason it tends to be very large.

On Question, Motion agreed to.
