HL Deb 21 June 1979 vol 400 cc1103-4
Lord HATCH of LUSBY

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government what further action they intend to take over the revelations of the Bingham Report.

Lord TREFGARNE

My Lords, as your Lordships know, this is an issue which the previous Government were unable to resolve. My right honourable friend the Lord Privy Seal stated in another place on 13th June that the Government are considering the matter and that a Statement will be made as soon as possible.

Lord HATCH of LUSBY

My Lords, I thank the noble Lord for his courtesy in answering my Question. May I ask him to draw to his right honourable friend's notice the fact that it was a member of his party who stated that, arising out of the Bingham Report, the whole integrity of Parliament was at stake and that, therefore, there is a very strong inter-party case for further examination of the responsibility for the revelations that were made by Bingham in his report?

Lord TREFGARNE

My Lords, I will certainly draw those words to my right honourable friend's attention.

The Earl of LAUDERDALE

My Lords, would the noble Lord not agree that it is the integrity not of Parliament but of the United Nations which is at stake in this ridiculous performance of sanctions on Rhodesia which have been broken by country after country?

Lord BROCKWAY

My Lords, is there not a great danger—

Several noble Lords: Order!

The LORD PRESIDENT of the COUNCIL (Lord Soames)

My Lords, I understand that the noble Lord, Lord Hale, was called for the next Question.
