My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they are taking immediate action to ensure that Torcross, South Devon, has a secure sea defence system installed before next winter.

Lord SANDYS

My Lords, the powers to carry out sea defence work are vested in land drainage authorities. The South West Water Authority has accepted responsibility for the work at Torcross and my right honourable friend the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has now approved the expenditure involved for grant aid.

My Lords, I thank the noble Lord for that most encouraging and satisfying Answer. Can he let me know the rate of grant?
