45 Clause 32, page 24, line 43, at end insert— (3) In paragraph 1(1) (d) of Schedule 2 to the European Communities Act 1972, for the words '£5 a day' (which give the maximum daily fine with which an offence created under the powers conferred by section 2(2) of that Act can under those powers be made punishable on summary conviction) there shall be substituted the words '£100 a day'.

Lord HARRIS of GREENWICH

My Lords, I beg to move that this House doth agree with the Commons in their Amendments Nos. 44 and 45. It may be helpful if I deal at the same time with Amendments Nos. 74, 75, 100, 107 to 112 inclusive, 115, 117 to 119 inclusive, 133 and 137. The Amendments all involve an increase in the maximum summary fine for purely summary offences. I do not propose to go into detail about each one of them, since they are all fairly self-evident. But I can assure the House that each proposed increase is reasonable, and each fits in with the new scale of maximum summary fines provided in Schedule 6. Several of the increases are designed to bring financial maxima into line with those in the Bill as introduced, or those which were inserted at an earlier stage in this House. I commend these increases to the House. My Lords, I beg to move.

Moved, That this House doth agree with the Commons in the said Amendments.—(Lord Harris of Greenwich.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
