HL Deb 03 February 1977 vol 379 c966

3.32 p.m.

The LORD CHANCELLOR (Lord Elwyn-Jones)

My Lords, I beg to move that this Bill be now read a second time. It is a Consolidation Bill. It consolidates, without amendment, the main provisions about notices to quit agricultural holdings in England and Wales, together with certain closely related provisions conferring power on the Lord Chancellor to provide for arbitration and certain other matters in connection with notices served by landlords which require a tenant to remedy breaches of the terms and conditions of his tenancy. The provisions consolidated are at present contained in Sections 23 to 33 of the Agricultural Holdings Act 1948 and in seven subsequent Acts, of which the latest is the recently enacted Agriculture (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976.

If the Bill is given a Second Reading by your Lordships, it will be referred to the Joint Committee in the usual way. I beg to move.

Moved, That the Bill be now read 2a.—(The Lord Chancellor.)

On Question, Bill read 2a and referred to the Joint Committee on Consolidation Bills.
