HL Deb 15 November 1976 vol 377 c1085

18 Leave out Clause 26.

The Commons disagreed to this Amendment for the following Reason:

19 Because the Commons consider that, while it should be unlawful for associations of 25 or more members to discriminate, there should be an exception for associations whose main object is to confer the benefits of membership on persons of a particular racial group defined otherwise than by reference to colour.

Lord HARRIS of GREENWICH

My Lords, I beg to move that this House doth not insist on their Amendment No. 18 to which the Commons have disagreed for the Reason numbered 19.

Moved, That this House doth not insist on the said Amendment to which the Commons have disagreed for the Reason numbered 19.—(Lord Harris of Greenwich.)

Lord HAILSHAM of SAINT MARYLEBONE

My Lords, the only thing I wish to say is that this is the only Reason of the Commons with which I agree. It is consequential on the last.
