HL Deb 17 March 1976 vol 369 cc355-6

Lord O'HAGAN asked Her Majesty's Government:

The number of

  1. (i) clerks in both Houses of Parliament; and
  2. (ii) civil servants
in each of the last 125 years or at other convenient intervals which clearly indicate significant trends over that period.

Lord SHEPHERD

(i) Civil Servants. Records of non-industrial Civil Service staff from 1902 and total Civil Service staff numbers (i.e. non-industrial and industrial) from 1939 are given in Table 1 of the publication Civil Service Statistics 1970 to which I would refer the noble Lord. Similar information is not available before these dates. The following figures bring up to date those in the Table:

Year(1st April) Non-Industrial Industrial (Thousands) Total
1971 498 202 700
1972 496 194 690
1973 511 189 700
1974 512 180 692
1975 524 177 701
1976 (1st January) 565 180 745
(ii) Clerks in both Houses of Parliament

The figures given below, which cover the same period as that for which Civil Service figures are available, do not include supporting staff. The figures for the Lords include the Clerks in the Record Office, serving both Houses of Parliament.
