HL Deb 22 June 1976 vol 372 cc289-91

Lord AVEBURY asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will give, for each of the months from June 1974 onwards and for each of the countries of the Indian sub-continent, the number of applications made for entry certificates from dependants of persons already settled in the United Kingdom, and the number granted, refused and withdrawn respectively in each of those months.

The figures include both dependants and a small number of others applying for settlement. Figures for withdrawals are not shown separately but average about six per month.

and COMMONWEALTH OFFICE (Lord Goronwy-Roberts): Precise and comparable figures are not available in all cases because the method of recording applications and decisions varies from post to post and has been amended from time to time during the period covered by the Question. In some cases where only applications are recorded (and not the number of individuals covered by each application) a multiplying factor has been used in order to arrive at a reasonable estimate of the number of individuals involved. The following tables show the latest numbers as estimated by the posts concerned. Two tables are shown for India because, prior to January 1975, the Deputy High Commission at Bombay did not record dependants' applications separately.
