HL Deb 25 July 1974 vol 353 c1855
LORD ROYLE

My Lords, on behalf of my noble friend Lord Crook, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in his name on the Order Paper.

The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they have plans to introduce legislation to limit the mushroom growth of so-called security firms, as suggested in the paper of Sir Douglas Osmond, the Chief Constable of Hampshire.

THE MINISTER OF STATE, HOME OFFICE (LORD HARRIS OF GREENWICH)

My Lords, my right honourable friend the Home Secretary has at present no plans to introduce legislation for the licensing of private security organisations.

LORD MAYBRAY-KING

My Lords, will the noble Lord take this opportunity to pay tribute to the reputable security firms, like Securicor, which recruit their staff very carefully, and which indeed recruit most of their staff from retired members of the police force?

LORD HARRIS OF GREENWICH

My Lords, I think that many of the employees of these private organisation do most useful work.

LORD ROYLE

My Lords, I am sorry, but I do not know the supplementary questions which my noble friend Lord Crook would have asked.
