HL Deb 05 March 1973 vol 339 cc859-60
LORD MOLSON

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government how many dockers took advantage of the Aldington-Jones voluntary retirement proposals in each week while they were operative; what was the total cost; how many of those who retired have found other work; whether insurance benefit is payable in full to those who have not and whether the retirement payment is taken into account if supplementary payments are claimed.

THE EARL OF GOWRIE

My Lords, with permission, I will circulate in the OFFICIAL REPORT weekly totals of registered dockers leaving under the special severance scheme. The final total is 8,398 men at a provisional cost of £30½ million. I have no information as to the number who have found other work. Insurance benefit is payable in full, subject to the individual's contributions position. The severance payment is taken into account if supplementary benefit is claimed.

The following is the information referred to:

My Lords, can my noble friend say from what fund this very large sum of money was derived and paid?

THE EARL OF GOWRIE

My Lords, I regret that I cannot give my noble friend that answer without notice, but I shall write to him.
