§ 3.22 p.m.
EARL ST. ALDWYNMy Lords, with the leave of the House my noble friend Lord Lothian will be making a Statement on the Icelandic fisheries dispute at a convenient moment after 3.30 p.m.
As many of your Lordships will know, there is to be a party for the staff of the House to-night as a sign of our appreciation of their work during what has been an exceptionally gruelling Session. In order that as many of the staff as possible may attend this party, I hope that the House may be able to adjourn by 6 o'clock, when the party starts. Secondly, I am sure that your Lordships will agree to the Peers' Guest Room and the Bishops' Bar being closed at 6 o'clock in order that the staff who have looked after us so well so far as liquid refreshment is concerned may also get to the Party.
§ LORD LEATHERLANDMy Lords, would it not be possible to try to discover sonic different nomenclature than that which is now applied to "the Bishops' Bar"? Is it not a fact that the use of this term creates an entirely erroneous impression among people outside as to the habits of the right reverend Prelates?
THE LORD BISHOP OF SOUTHWARKMy Lords, may I ask why the noble Lord opposite should think that it gives an erroneous impression?
EARL ST. ALDWYNMy Lords, in view of the comment of the right reverend Prelate, I really do not feel that any further remarks from me are necessary.
§ LORD BLYTONMy Lords, is the noble Earl aware that I hope he will not alter the name, because the Bishops' Bar is the only place here where one can get a drink on sanctified ground?
