§ Clause 11 [Supplementary provisions as to the register]:

("(4) All fees prescribed under this section shall be subject to the approval of the Minister.")—(Lord Janner.)
THE MINISTER OF STATE, HOME OFFICE (VISCOUNT COLVILLE OF CULROSS)My Lords, the only quarrel that I have with the noble Lord, Lord Janner, is that I suggested it on Committee and not on Second Reading. It would be churlish of me if I did not say that of course we accept it in principle.
§ On Question, Amendment agreed to.
§ The Schedule [Constitution of the Council and Supplementary Provisions]:
§
LORD JANNER moved Amendment No. 2:
Page 7, line 15, at end insert—
("() one person who shall be nominated by the President of the Royal Society;").
§ The noble Lord said: My Lords, before I move this Amendment may I offer my apologies to the Minister and to the House for having referred to the Second Reading rather than to the Committee stage in respect of the first Amendment.
§ This Amendment is a rectification which arises from the fact that, unfortunately, the other Sponsors and myself omitted the apparent formality of extending the courtesy to the Royal Society of asking whether they would be agreeable to having one of their members on the Council. We have now heard from the President of the Royal Society that he is quite agreeable.
VISCOUNT COLVILLE or CULROSSMy Lords, this question is now entirely satisfactorily resolved. I suppose that the only slight sadness is that my noble friend Lord Cranbrook is not here publicly to discard his white sheet and show that all is now in order.
§ LORD DONALDSON OF KINGS-BRIDGEMy Lords, I think I should correct something that my noble friend Lord Janner said. It is not that the Royal Society shall nominate someone from the Society to be a member, but that the President should consult with the Government about whom he should nominate. There is a certain difference.
§ On Question, Amendment agreed to.
