HL Deb 19 December 1972 vol 337 c949
BARONESS SUMMERSKILL

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government why they abstained from supporting the resolution of the Third Committee of the General Assembly of the United Nations nominating 1975 as International Women's Year.

BARONESS TWEEDSMUIR OF BELHELVIE

My Lords, we voted for this proposal in the General Assembly yesterday. As my right honourable friend the Minister of State said in another place on December 11, we abstained in committee on the proposal to designate 1975 as International Women's Year because the study of the Declaration on Discrimination against Women will not be complete until 1976.

BARONESS SUMMERSKILL

My Lords, may I thank the noble Baroness for giving instructions that we should vote for the proposal yesterday when the Question was down?

BARONESS TWEEDSMUIR OF BELHELVIE

My Lords, I thank the noble Baroness.

LORD CONESFORD

My Lords, what is an "international woman"?

BARONESS TWEEDSMUIR OF BELHELVIE

My Lords, I am sure it is the same as the "statutory woman".
