§ 3.19 p.m.
§ LORD BESWICKMy Lords, can the noble Earl the Captain of the Gentlemen at Arms make any statement about the date on which the House will be expected to return after the Summer Recess? I understand there may well be imponderables, but it would be convenient if we could have such information as is possible.
EARL ST. ALDWYNMy Lords, I am afraid it is rather difficult to forecast exactly when the House will return after the Recess. It depends really on how much time will be required for the Report stage and Third Reading of the Immigration Bill. Until between us, through the usual channels, we can get some idea of how much time is required, it is difficult to indicate. If those stages can be taken fairly quickly, then it may be possible for the House to come back on October 18. On the other hand, if more time is required it will mean coming back on October 11 and 12, and then adjourning until October 18.
While I am on my feet, and with the leave of the House, may I say that at a suitable moment after 3.30 p.m. my noble friend Lord Drumalbyn will be making a Statement on Upper Clyde Shipbuilders?
§ LORD BESWICKMy Lords, I can understand the noble Earl's difficulties, and I thank him for what he has said.
