THE LORD CHANCELLOR

My Lords, I beg to move that this House doth agree with the Commons in their Amendments Nos. 14 to 19 inclusive. I should like to take with those the linked Amendments, Nos. 22 to 25 inclusive. These Amendments substitute the word "deputy" for "temporary" in the clauses dealing with temporary appointments. Your Lordships may remember that, when the Bill passed through your Lordships' House, the title "temporary" incurred a certain amount of criticism, not least from my noble and learned predecessor Lord Dilhorne, and that criticism was repeated in another place. I think it was the Opposition who suggested that "deputy" was preferable to "temporary", and I am certainly very happy to accept it. I beg to move that this House doth agree with the Commons in their Amendments Nos. 14 to 19 inclusive.

Moved, That this House doth agree with the Commons in the said Amendments. —(The Lord Chancellor.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
