HL Deb 22 April 1971 vol 317 cc837-8

[No. 36]

Clause 52, page 36, line 16, leave out from "words" to end of line 18 and insert "from 'magistrates' in the first place where it occurs to the end of the paragraph there shall be substituted the words 'appointed from among their own number by the magistrates for the county in accordance with a scheme made by the magistrates' courts committee for, or for an area including, the county and approved by the Secretary of State'."

THE LORD CHANCELLOR

My Lords, I beg to move that this House doth agree with the Commons in their Amendment No. 36. This Amendment enables Magistrates Courts' Committees to make a scheme for the selection of justices to serve on police committees. As originally drafted, the Bill would have obliged all magistrates in a particular county to take part in the selection and this procedure would have been unduly cumbersome. In large counties it will be more practicable to divide the county into parts so that each part can appoint its representatives to the police committee. My Lords, I beg to move.

Moved, That this House doth agree with the Commons in the said Amendment.—(Tine Lord Chancellor.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
