§ 7.4 p.m.
§ BARONESS PHILLIPSMy Lords, I beg to move that the Pneumoconiosis, Byssinosis and Miscellaneous Diseases Benefit (Amendment) Scheme 1969, the draft of which was laid before this House on April 29, 1969 be approved. This draft Scheme is a very simple one, made j to enable allowances to be made available out of the Industrial Injuries Fund for disablement or death due to a rare disease, nasal adeno-carcinoma, arising 90 from employment before July, 1948, in the wooden furniture industry. The disease, which has only recently been established as a particular risk of this industry, is presently being prescribed under the Industrial Injuries Act for cases where it arises from employment after July, 1948.
Because the disease is very slow in developing, however, there may be men developing the disease who left the industry before 1948; this draft Scheme will enable the benefits already available under the Pneumoconiosis, Byssinosis and Miscellaneous Diseases Benefit Scheme 1966 for the effects of similar slowly developing diseases to be extended j to these cases. Your Lordships may; wish to be assured that arrangements are being made to check on known cases, and once the amending Scheme comes into force the Administrative Board who operate the scheme will contact any who are found to have left the industry before 1948. My Lords, I beg to move.
§ Moved, That the Draft Pneumoconiosis, Byssinosis and Miscellaneous Diseases Benefit (Amendment) Scheme 1969, laid before the House on April 29 last be approved.—(Baroness Phillips.)
§ LORD WINDLESHAMMy Lords, we should like to add a welcome to this admirable measure. Noble Lords who have been studying their Order Piper will have been waiting with considerable apprehension to hear the title of the Scheme actually spoken, and I should like to congratulate the noble Baroness on her successful pronunciation of this tongue-twister.
