HL Deb 12 June 1969 vol 302 cc770-1

3.8 p.m.

LORD TREFGARNE

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government—

  1. (i) What is the nature of the work at present in progress along the Victoria Embankment;
  2. (ii) When they expect it to be completed.]

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDERSECRETARY OF STATE FOR DEFENCE, R.A.F. (LORD WINTER-BOTTOM)

My Lords, London Transport are strengthening the roof of the District Line tunnel to withstand heavy, modern traffic on the road above. The work is being carried out in two stages. The section from Westminster to Charing Cross should be finished by September this year and the section from Charing Cross to the Temple by the end of the year.

LORD TREFGARNE

My Lords, I am much obliged to the noble Lord for that reply. Will he ask London Transport to ensure that the very minimum of inconvenience is caused along the Embankment while the work is in progress? Will he also ask them to ensure that they will do everything possible to see that the work is finished on time?

LORD WINTERBOTTOM

My Lords, it is my impression that this is taking place.

LORD BYERS

My Lords, may I ask the Minister if he would consider, when things like this happen—because so many Londoners are interested—whether it would be possible to put up a simple notice explaining to people what is happening? I am sure it would be very much appreciated if this could be done.

LORD WINTERBOTTOM

My Lords, I think that is a very sensible suggestion. I hope that it will be noted by the appropriate authorities.
