HL Deb 24 July 1969 vol 304 c1090

3.35 p.m.

LORD BESWICK

My Lords, I wonder whether it would be convenient at this point if I said to the House that it is proposed that the House should adjourn to-morrow, Friday, July 25, until Monday, October 13? On a further matter, about which there is wide interest, may I say that my right honourable friend the Home Secretary proposes to table today certain Amendments in lieu of the Lords' Amendments to the House of Commons (Redistribution of Seats) (No. 2) Bill, and I understand that they will not be proceeded with to-day.

LORD CARRINGTON

My Lords, I am obliged to the noble Lord, the Government Chief Whip, for giving us that information. It would seem from that that we shall not then be receiving the Bill back from another place until the spill-over after October 13. I think that your Lordships—certainly noble Lords on this side of the House—will widely welcome this as evidence that the Government are seriously considering the Amendments which your Lordships passed earlier this week.

THE LORD PRIVY SEAL (LORD SHACKLETON)

My Lords, the noble Lord, Lord Carrington, needs to be careful as to the conclusion which he draws. None the less, I appreciate his conciliatory approach.
