§ 9.54 p.m.
§ LORD O'HAGANhad given Notice of his intention to ask Her Majesty's Government: Whether they are aware of the deterioration of race relations in the United Kingdom, and of the harm being 1047 done by the tone of public debate on race and immigration; and whether they will come forward with proposals which will reassure the inhabitants of the United Kingdom, whatever their colour. The noble Lord said: My Lords, because the hour is so late I must ask leave to postpone the Unstarred Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper. I apologise now, as I hope I have apologised in person, to those of your Lordships who have been inconvenienced. I hope you will nourish your resentment and let it blossom forth into vigorous speech when my Unstarred Question comes up again, which will be soon.
