§ 5.34 p.m.
§ LORD BESWICKMy Lords, I beg to move the Motion in my name relating to Peers' Expenses.
§ Moved, That this House, having taken note of the Statement made by the Leader of the House on December 11, 1969, approves, with effect from January 1, 1970, the proposals of the Leader of the House, namely:—
- (i) to increase from four and a half guineas to six pounds, ten shillings, the limit upon the daily allowance payable to Lords attending sittings of this House or of Committees of the House;
- (ii) to extend the facilities now available to Lords for free travel on certain journeys by rail, sea and air so as to cover travel by road by public transport;
- (iii) to replace the limit on the allowances now payable to Lords for travel by road on certain journeys by a limit, in respect of the use of a car, of 6d. a mile.—(Lord Beswick)
VISCOUNT GOSCHENMy Lords, when the noble Lord, the Lord Privy Seal, announced this increase in Peers' expenses he made a very apt speech, and I do not think there is anything more that I can say, except that in all parts 1327 of the House we are grateful; and I think this is a very good note on which to end.
