HL Deb 09 April 1968 vol 291 c174
THE LORD CHANCELLOR (LORD GARDINER)

My Lords, I beg to move that this Bill be now read a third time.

Moved, That the Bill be now lead 3a.—(The Lord Chancellor.)

On Question, Bill read 3a.

THE LORD CHANCELLOR

My Lords, I beg to move that the Bill do now pass. In doing so, I do not think that we ought to part with this Bill without my repeating what I said to a very small House at Committee stage; namely, that this is one of the biggest consolidations of English Statute law which has ever taken place. The Law Commission have taken the 24 Acts dealing with rent, repealed half of them and consolidated the rest. The whole of our Statute Law on this subject is now, at last, logically arranged and in one place—a great boon and blessing to man. If it is your Lordships' wish, I would inform the Chairman and members of the Joint Consolidation Committee of our appreciation of its work, not as a formality, but because the consideration of a Bill of this length in this kind of consolidation has involved much more work than usually is tin case. I beg to move.

Moved, That the Bill do now piss.—(The Lord Chancellor.)

On Question, Bill passed, and sent to the Commons.
