HL Deb 01 November 1967 vol 286 cc47-8
THE LORD PRIVY SEAL (THE EARL OF LONGFORD)

My Lords, I beg to move that a Select Committee be appointed to consider the manner in which the proceedings of the House can best be publicly broadcast for an experimental period, and the suggested members are named on the Order Paper.

I should like, first of all, to apologise for a mistake on the Order Paper. Lord Hunt's name appears on the proposed list of members of the Committee, and although I am sure he would have made an admirable member, in fact the suggestion is that Lord Wedgwood should be proposed. With the leave of the House, therefore, I should like to move a verbal Amendment to the Motion as it now stands, substituting the name of Lord Wedgwood for that of Lord Hunt. Apart from this I would only wish to say that the appointment of this Committee results from the Second Report made last Session by the Select Committee on Televising the Proceedings of the House of Lords. The Committee then recommended the appointment of a Select Committee this Session to continue their work and to submit a Report to the House as soon as is practicable after the closed-circuit broadcasting experiments, which your Lordships have agreed should be conducted early in 1968.

The composition of the Select Committee this Session is almost the same as that of last Session's Committee except for some replacements which are necessary owing to the fact that some members of last Session's Committee have indicated through the usual channels that they will be unable to serve this Session. My Lords, I beg to move.

Moved, That a Select Committee be appointed to consider the manner in which the proceedings of the House can best be publicly broadcast for an experimental period:

That the Lords following, with the Chairman of Committees, be named of the Committee:

—(The Earl of Longford.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
