HL Deb 13 December 1967 vol 287 c1106
LORD DRUMALBYN

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government what annual remuneration by way of (a) salary and (b) expenses is being paid by the Government to the Governor of Rhodesia.]

THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR COMMONWEALTH AFFAIRS (LORD SHEPHERD)

My Lords, as my right honourable friend the Prime Minister said in another place in answer to a similar Question on December 6, the position is that the Governor has preferred not to receive any financial assistance from the British Government. I am sure that Parliament would otherwise have been most ready to approve provisions for appropriate remuneration.

LORD DRUMALBYN

My Lords, may I ask the noble Lord when the Governor expressed this preference?

LORD SHEPHERD

My Lords, I have not got the actual date, but it is certainly clear that this was the view of the Governor; and most recently, when my right honourable friend the Commonwealth Secretary was in Salisbury, the same view was then expressed.

LORD DRUMALBYN

My Lords, I am much obliged to the noble Lord.
