HL Deb 24 April 1967 vol 282 cc353-4

2.36 p.m.

Order of the Day read for the Consideration of the Commons Reasons for disagreeing to certain of the Lords Amendments.

THE PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY BOARD OF TRADE (LORD WALSTON)

My Lords, I beg to move that the Commons Reasons for disagreeing to certain of the Lords Amendments be now considered. It may be for the convenience of the House if I move this Motion formally so that the main discussion can take place on the Motion that this House doth not insist, which I propose to move in respect of each of the Amendments. I beg to move.

Moved, That the Commons Reasons for disagreeing to certain of the Lords Amendments be now considered.—(Lord Walston.)

LORD NUGENT OF GUILDFORD

My Lords, may I say a word before this Motion is put to the House? I am interested to see the Reason why the first Amendment was not agreed to by the Commons; namely: Because the Amendment might prevent the making of provision appropriate to the needs of a section of the livestock, or livestock products, industry. Perhaps I might remind your Lordships that the Amendment which was proposed and carried by this noble House was that the compulsory powers which the Government had put into this Bill for the purpose of the work of the new Meat and Livestock Commission should not operate for the first five years of its life.

LORD WALSTON

My Lords, may I interrupt the noble Lord for one moment? I have not yet moved a Motion on this Amendment. That will come after the formal Motion. I do not know whether the noble Lord wishes to continue, or will wait until the Motion on the Amendment.

LORD NUGENT OF GUILDFORD

I will wait.

On Question, Motion agreed to.
