§ LORD CARRINGTONMy Lords, I wonder whether I might ask the noble Earl the Leader of the House a question relating to Business? He will remember that I tried this morning to put down a Private Notice Question on the events in Ghana, and for reasons that I quite understand, partly because of the lack of reliable information, the noble Earl felt unable to agree. He will appreciate, I am sure, that on all sides of the House there is neat interest in this matter, particularly in so far as the events there affect the safety and interests of British subjects. I would ask him whether he would make a Statement to this House at the very first opportunity, when he gets some information which he is able to communicate to us.
THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (THE EARL OF LONG-FORD)My Lords, I appreciate the great concern that is felt throughout the country at the news to-day from Ghana, and I appreciate also the action of the noble Lord, Lord Carrington, in not pressing the Question this afternoon. In reply to the question he has now put to me, I can only say that I shall be happy to make a Statement of the kind he mentions if at that time the noble Lord and I agree that it is urgently necessary.
