§ To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they will make a statement upon the extension of the yellow traffic box system in Central London; and how many have been added since December 13 last.]
§ THE PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY, MINISTRY OF POWER (LORD LINDGREN)My Lords, the Greater London Council, as the traffic authority, are now responsible for the box junction experiment in Central London. They have recently undertaken, with the police, a review of its effects. Any further extension of the system will depend on the outcome of this review. The system has not been extended to other junctions in London since December 13 last.
§ BARONESS BURTON OF COVENTRYMy Lords, is my noble friend aware that, while I am very appreciative of his efforts, we seem to be getting nowhere 262 fast? Would he feel that perhaps it might be useful in the near future to have an Unstarred Question on this matter, so that we may probe the preference of the Ministry for motor traffic as against pedestrians?
§ LORD LINDGRENMy Lords, that is a matter for my noble friend, but I must point out that as the result of Parliamentary action the traffic authority for London is now the Greater London Council and, that being so, the responsibility is with them.
