HL Deb 26 October 1965 vol 269 cc523-4

2.35 p.m.

BARONESS BURTON OF COVENTRY

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they are aware of the serious difficulties caused to pedestrians, particularly the elderly, by traffic being allowed to filter right or left at busy junctions such as the many arising in the west end of London; and whether investigation has been made into this problem.]

THE PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY, MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT (LORD LINDGREN)

My Lords, the safety of pedestrians is always carefully considered before a decision is made to allow traffic to filter at a junction controlled by traffic signals. But I shall be glad to arrange for an investigation to be made at any particular junctions where the noble Lady has evidence of difficulties.

BARONESS BURTON OF COVENTRY

My Lords, is my noble friend aware that I have never before had such a satisfactory Answer from any Government on this particular matter? May I ask him whether he will be kind enough to look at the matter in so far as Oxford Street is concerned; and is he aware that I shall be delighted to send him details of the actual crossings?

LORD LINDGREN

If the noble Lady will send me those details I will arrange for a special investigation to be made and will report either direct to her or to the House, just as she wishes.
