HL Deb 24 March 1964 vol 256 c1130

2.50 p.m.

LORD ALPORT

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they are aware that the Supreme Court Judges in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland have had no increase in their salaries since 1954, while those of the lower judiciary have been increased on three, and in some cases four, occasions since that date; and whether Her Majesty's Government will take the necessary action to increase these salaries.]

THE LORD CHANCELLOR (LORD DILHORNE)

My Lords, the answer is, Yes. It is the Government's intention to introduce next Session legislation to provide for increases in the remuneration of the Superior Judiciary.

LORD ALPORT

My Lords, I am grateful to my noble and learned friend for that Answer. Can he tell us whether the Judges of the Supreme Court will be equally grateful?

THE LORD CHANCELLOR

My Lords, I should hope so, in due course.
