HL Deb 13 July 1964 vol 260 cc1-2

2.35 p.m.

LORD FRASER OF LONSDALE

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they have any further statement to make regarding the £1 million to be provided by the German Government to compensate persons in the United Kingdom who have suffered at the hands of the Nazis; and, in particular, whether they will state how this fund will be administered and to whom claims should be addressed.]

THE MINISTER WITHOUT PORTFOLIO (LORD CARRINGTON)

My Lords, I cannot add to the statement made by my noble friend Lord Dundee on June 9, except to say that I hope that the registration notice will be ready very shortly. It will be given wide circulation and claimants will then know how to proceed.

LORD FRASER OF LONSDALE

My Lords, on the assumption that the registration notice comes to light towards the end of this month, and supposing that aspects of it are open to criticism, and that some persons may wish it to be widened or varied, will there be any opportunity of discussing it in this House, or what would be the procedure for calling attention to any doubtful aspect of it?

LORD CARRINGTON

My Lords, I very much hope that this notice will come out before the Recess. And I hope that perhaps my noble friend will read it before he assumes that it will not be satisfactory. But if he has read it, and then finds that there are points he wishes to raise, I am sure that it will be possible to discuss it in this House.
