HL Deb 29 January 1964 vol 254 cc1130-1
THE LORD CHANCELLOR (LORD DILHORNE)

My Lords, I beg to move the Motion standing in my name. I need not detain your Lordships for more than a very few moments over this Motion. Under the relevant provisions of the Judicature Act any Order amending the current scheme of district probate registries requires an Affirmative Resolution in each House of Parliament; and this Order has already been approved in another place and has also been examined and approved by the Special Orders Committee of this House.

In brief, the effect of the Order is that the two district probate registries at Bodmin and Exeter will come under a single Registrar instead of each having its own Registrar. There will be an appreciable saving to the taxpayer, and the volume of work, although it has recently increased, does not justify the retention of two posts. I am satisfied that the service to the public will not be in any way impaired if a single Registrar is appointed to take the place of both Registrars. I beg to move that the Order be approved.

Moved, That the Draft District Probate Registries Order, 1963, be approved.—(The Lord Chancellor.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
